Biography
I am Katia Solodka, a professional full time artist based in Braga, Portugal. My work is a dialogue between the structured discipline of my academic art education and the fluid, unpredictable nature of human emotion expressed through the floral form.
Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of exhibiting in numerous international exhibitions and receiving awards that have continuously shaped my artistic vision. This background grounds my practice, allowing me to approach abstract floral themes not merely as decoration, but as a deliberate investigation of sensory essence—capturing the light, the movement, and the ephemeral spirit of a garden. I paint flowers to capture the fleeting sense of presence they bring into our lives.
My creative process is a game of contrasts and a constant search for balance between the floral and the abstract. I create a hint of flowers and gardens, yet leave enough space for the viewer to get lost in their own thoughts. Technically, I combine energetic palette knife strokes that build structure with the delicate transparency and fluidity of liquid paint that freely runs across the canvas. This is complemented by the slow, meditative application of multiple glaze layers. It is this technique that gives my paintings a sense of breath and evolving luminosity, which changes as the light shifts across the canvas.
Each of my collections is an intimate reflection of my journey. The Garden in Blue series was born from my migration from Ukraine to the Netherlands and eventually to Portugal—a sequence of profound shifts that forced me to redefine what "home" means. In contrast, the Garden of Dreams series is a meditation on hope—a testament that beauty remains a constant, and that even in the most challenging seasons, the return of spring is inevitable.
For me, art is an emotional investment. In an often chaotic world, I believe that bringing vibrant, blooming landscapes into one’s private space is an act of resilience and grace. I am honored to share these works with collectors who find meaning in the dance between light, color, and memory.
