About Kathleen McDermott

  • Biography

I grew up on a back road dairy farm in far Western New York and I have been drawing and painting since I was a child. I am self-taught in that I never had the opportunity to take art classes beyond high school. After my children were grown and on their own, I found much more time to dedicate to my art obsession and took up my paint brushes in earnest again in 1999. I was represented in several Myrtle Beach SC area galleries over the 19 years we lived there, and we moved across the state of South Carolina to Rock Hill SC in December 2016.

I sign my paintings with my maiden name in honor of the child in me who still keeps the delightful dream of being an artist alive. I was juried in for membership in Oil Painters of America in the Spring of 2018.

I am a nature enthusiast and amateur birder, and hiking the woods is one of my favorite activities, especially when the sun is shining and I have my Nikon camera with me.   I do my best to capture nature's amazing beauty in my paintings.  It is how I say "Look, isn't that beautiful?"  I welcome your comments.

If you see a painting you especially like which is already sold, I gladly do commissions of similar paintings at similar size and price points.

    South Carolina Artist in Residence

I was awarded a spot in South Carolina State Park's Artist in Residence program for the 2015 calendar year. I spent a few beautiful October days at Oconee State Park in the Great Smokey Mountains taking photos and making field sketches for future paintings. My painting "Afternoon Shadows at Oconee State Park" was donated to South Carolina State Parks as part of their Artist in Residence program. You can see this shady forest landscape in the SOLD WORKS section of my website at www.kmcdermottart.com.

    Horry County Arts Council Grant

I applied for and was awarded a county arts grant in the amount of $800 to purchase art supplies (mainly professional quality Windsor & Newton oil paints) by Horry County South Carolina's Arts Council back in 2010. I produced two very large three section landscape paintings of scenes based on photos I took in Vereen Gardens - an Horry County public park in Little River, SC. (I continue to use those lush oil paints to this day.) Per conditions of accepting the grant, I donated one of big paintings to Horry County for display in the their new Berry Memorial Center building which was built at the entrance to Vereen Gardens. Both paintings produced as part of the Horry County Arts Council grant can be seen on line at www.kmcdermottart.com.
