About Elo Wobig

  • Biography

Like many artists, I have loved drawing and mark making since childhood.  When my family immigrated to the US from Taiwan, I recall being unable to speak to anyone in my kindergarten class.  But when one student saw my origami creations, the entire class lined up at my desk to receive one; finally, I was able to find a connection. I was always preoccupied with coloring books and observing nature, collecting rocks, and drawing. I won my first art contest in the 4th grade, which took my family to the Ringling Brother's Circus with front row seats and a small bit of pageantry in the show for myself. I continued to draw and create, win awards in school, design T-shirts, posters, costumes and yearbooks through college.

Having a passion for learning, especially about life sciences, I studied biology and medicine. I was fortunate to practice Emergency physician for many years. Yet in in addition to career and raising a family, I've always been sketching and remained curious about making things.  In 2015 I began keeping a sketch diary, recording visual snapshots of my daily life in ink and watercolor wash.  In spring of 2016, I painted a 12 x 9 foot mural for the school play. The overwhelmingly positive response led to a commissioned painting which reignited my journey into fine art painting. By October of 2016 I began painting nearly every day, and started to study oil painting from Jennifer Diehl in January 2017. I entered my first painting events in the summer of 2017, and with some unexpected success and praise, I became emboldened to call myself, “Artist.”

I love the texture, thickness and endless possibilities of oil paint; thus oil is my first medium. Yet, to maintain a daily practice of painting, I carry around a sketchbook and water media (pen, watercolor, casein and gouache.)  My subjects are places and people that capture my eye, I find inspiration everywhere, especially where I live in the Portland metro area. While I am primarily interested in landscape, I also paint small still life artworks and portrait commissions. Please see my complete portfolio and information on commissions on my webpage. My newest work is often published immediately on Facebook and Instagram.
