I am a Scottish Figure Painter. I work in Oil and create work that borrows heavily from the back catalogue of Art History and re-appropriates elements to illustrate the modern human condition. I do this through the use of composition and how the figure is presented. Revealing thought provoking insights into human behaviours and relationships, body politics and what we reveal about ourselves subconsciously. The result often depicts romantic and nihilistic conclusions in a single suspended moment.
I work exclusively in Oil because of it ties me to 500 years of figure painting, I like its vibrancy, robustness and its consistency. I am inspired by the “Northern Light” a particular silvery shimmery light found in Scotland and Northern Europe and its use in Northern Renaissance and Flemish painting. I revisit it to convey fleeting moments . A winters twilight, fading light of an autumnal afternoon.

My more recent works incorporate religious motifs re-appropriated in a modern setting.
