I wanted this large oil painting to feel alive, so I leaned into loose, expressive brushwork and a vibrant palette that lets colour and pattern do the talking. The zebra isn’t rendered in a traditional way, instead the familiar stripes are broken up and reimagined as rhythmic marks that create a strong sense of motion across the canvas. Bright flashes of colour cut through the composition, adding excitement and a playful edge, while the layered oil paint gives the surface depth. The painting changes the longer you look at it, with new details and relationships between colour and pattern revealing themselves over time.
