Youth and Wisdom (2018) Original Oil Painting by Anna Dyachuk

This large-scale oil painting (130 × 150 cm) creates an almost physical presence in space.

A female figure appears within a strange, protective world of wings, birds, flowers and an enigmatic watching presence. Human, animal and symbolic forms merge into one organism, somewhere between a sanctuary, a dream and an inner landscape.

The painting was created during an earlier figurative period of my practice, when I was exploring archetypal imagery, transformation and the relationship between vulnerability and protection. Although my work has since moved toward greater abstraction, this piece already contains many of the ideas that continue to interest me today: layered realities, states between the visible and invisible, and the feeling that an image can hold more than one meaning at once.

At 130 × 150 cm, the work has a strong architectural presence. Its scale allows the wing-like form to almost surround the viewer, while the restrained palette of gold, ivory, pale blue and turquoise gives the painting an unexpectedly quiet quality despite its complexity.
