Last summer, while cycling through Rotterdam, we stopped at Sabor Sabor—a wonderful, authentic Mexican restaurant on Adrien Mildersstraat, run by two incredibly kind people. We go there often for their delicious food and the best margaritas I’ve ever had.

The terrace was full, so we sat on a bench built around a big tree in the square. As the sun was setting, I took the photos of the tree that became this painting.

This work is made on a 140 x 140 cm 3D aluminium canvas. I printed an edited photo on paper, bonded it to the canvas, and worked over it with gel medium, bronze palladium chrome paint, oils, and oil sticks.

The edges are bright orange, and I built a thick, solid frame with the same orange inside. The outside is finished in dark brown lacquer that lets the wood grain show through—giving it a mid-century modern feel. framed 144x144x6cm.
