Original artwork description:

By the early 20th century yacht racing was an organised sport with numerous yachts being specifically built to exacting designs taking part in international races. This painting is of one of those yachts being sailed to make most use of the sea conditions. I regularly exhibit with the Royal Society of Marine Artists and won the Oil Painting Prize at the 2023 annual exhibition. Most of my traditional marine paintings focus on sail, usually with an historical angle too.

Throughout the 19th century yacht design had advanced with ideas being exchanged particularly across the Atlantic. Yacht clubs were being established around the world with boats ranging from single masted sloops of 20 or 30 tons to multi-masted schooners in excess of 100 tons. Competitions became annual events and the America´s Cup one of the most famous. In 1851 the schooner America had crossed the Atlantic Ocean to challenge several British rivals racing around the Isle of Wight (off UK south coast). The cup, named after the first winner is still a most prestigious prize. That first race was quite eventful, not without controversy and with some British boats not completing the race. The American boat won.

Designers had used the speed and handling properties of fast trading schooners and the remarkably fast pilot boats operating on the US Eastern Seaboard to create these classic yachts.

Depicted here in this very detailed original oil painting is one of these classic racing yachts from a century ago just prior to the J class yachts becoming the established norm. Painted in a very representational style using traditional techniques with top grade materials. The painted surface is mostly quite smooth however there is some texture particularly evident in the painting of the sea.

Supplied ready to hang in a contemporary style painted white and natural wood frame. Available unframed if preferred, there would be a minor reduction in the price. Shipped in a robust purpose built plywood box to ensure safe transit.

Please note that there may be an additional import duty for some international destinations, on average around 5%. A sales tax may also apply to some US states.

But do please also note that this is a great painting and feel the wind on your face!

Materials used:

professional quality oils on linen canvas over a hardwood stretcher
