the painting is part of the "work" cycle and depicts some street musicians, or gypsies, who are preparing to follow a group of marching peasants.
In preparing for the departure, while tuning the instruments, they extinguish their fire that sprang from a pile of stacked weapons.
The peasants on the march could also not go to work in the fields, but march for the war following the man on the elephant a Mahout, probable metaphor of Hannibal.
