Artwork description
WIND THROUGH THE MAREMMA HILLS
I made this image chasing a single gesture — the wind bending across the Maremma hills on a summer afternoon, moving grass and light in one continuous sweep. Rather than freezing that motion, I let my camera move with it, translating a few seconds of wind into long, fluid arcs of colour.
The composition splits into two rhythms. Above, a deep, saturated green rolls like a held breath, almost still by comparison. Below, pale strokes of silvery white and sage break into countless overlapping curves, each one a trace of grass caught mid-sway. Between them runs a soft, hazy line — not a horizon so much as a threshold, where stillness gives way to movement.
What the image can't hold is the sound that surrounded me as I shot it — the frantic, incessant chorus of cicadas, relentless in the summer heat. Absent from the frame, it shaped the moment as much as the wind did, and I think of it as the photograph's invisible pulse.
The tension between the grounded green and the near-white blur of wind-struck grass, the warmth of a low summer light barely visible in the corner, sits at the very center of why I made this photograph.
