Where the Night Begins is a large original oil painting from my ongoing In the Moonlight series, devoted to the changing relationship between landscape, darkness and light.
A moon rises above the sea while clouds move across the night sky in broad, heavily textured passages of blue, indigo and turquoise. Along the distant coastline, a narrow constellation of warm lights marks the presence of a town. Their glow is deliberately small against the scale of the sky and sea.
I wanted to preserve this contrast: the intimacy of human light and the immense space surrounding it.
The moon does not simply illuminate the landscape. Its cool light moves through the clouds and across the restless surface of the water, appearing and disappearing among darker passages. Thick layers of oil paint and expressive palette-knife work give the sky an almost physical presence, while warmer touches along the distant shore create a counterpoint to the predominantly nocturnal palette.
The painting belongs to my continuing exploration of moonlight as a way of transforming familiar landscapes. At night, details disappear and the relationship between light, color and space becomes more intense. The landscape remains recognizable, yet moves toward something more emotional and elusive.
For me, Where the Night Begins is about that threshold — the moment when the visible world recedes and light becomes the subject itself.
