Weather (2026) Original Oil Painting by Laura Mead

61 x 61 x 3cm (unframed)

£6,681.92

This painting explores the invisible burden of carrying emotional storms within us. Encased inside a space helmet, the child appears protected from the outside world, yet the threat does not come from beyond the glass—it exists entirely within.

A dense storm cloud occupies the space where thoughts should be. Lightning fractures the darkness, symbolizing anxiety, fear, grief, and the relentless noise of an unsettled mind. The helmet, often associated with exploration and discovery, becomes a paradoxical symbol of isolation. It protects, but it also separates. The child is safe, yet alone.

The oversized eyes and vulnerable expression invite the viewer to confront a familiar experience: the struggle of appearing functional while carrying immense emotional weight internally. The storm remains unseen by others, contained behind a transparent barrier, reflecting how mental and emotional battles are often hidden beneath calm surfaces.

Painted in warm oranges and muted greys, the work contrasts external warmth with internal turbulence. The tension between these colours mirrors the conflict between how we present ourselves to the world and what we may be experiencing privately.

Weather System is a reflection on emotional survival. It speaks to the children and adults who learned to contain their storms, who carried entire climates inside themselves while continuing to move through the world. The painting asks a simple question: what would happen if we treated inner weather with the same compassion and understanding we offer those caught in a storm we can see?
