Vinicunca, Rainbow Mountain (2021)Acrylic painting by Gisella Stapleton
102 x 80.6 x 4cm (unframed)
£1,200
Original artwork description
Inspired in Vinicunca, (Rainbow Mountain) located in the Andes of Peru with an altitude of 5,200 metres (17,100 ft) above sea level in the Cusco region, between the districts of Cusipata, province of Quispicanchi, Pitumarca, and the province of Canchis
People called it Rainbow Mountain because it has a series of stripes of various colors due to its mineralogical composition on the slopes and summits. The mountain used to be covered by glacier caps, but these have melted due to global warming.
The first time I saw this mountain I thought I was seeing a gigantic traditional awayo cloth (traditional Inca cloth) covering the hill with the many colours and tones one next to the other, I imagined it as I have it painted now.
