I met Vic and Gerry in 2024 on the streets of Salisbury. Vic and Gerry were good friends and looked out for each other as they navigated their days on the traumatic and sometimes violent streets. Vic and Gerry were homeless. They had ended up on the streets suddenly and in a blink of an eye, yet they were desperate to get out of this emotional rollercoaster and find a home which would allow them to start again. They were finding this an impossible task. Their frustration and anger towards this unfair system was only softened by their friendship for each other.

As soon as I saw Vic and Gerry, I immediately saw their warmth and compassion for each other. I knew that I had to paint these two guys, I had to paint a portrait that showed how two people, two quite different people keep each other going despite all the hardship that they endure. This is a painting about friendship.

As soon as I got back to my studio I made several sketches and primed the canvas. I started working on the underpainting focusing on light, structure and perspective. I then started adding details, the painting started breathing at that point, started to live. This is a hyperrealism portrait that screams hope, defiance and love.
