Description

“Upbringing” is a psychological reflection on discipline, emotional suppression, and the invisible rules that shape personality from childhood. The work explores the experience of growing up in a generation where strict parenting, obedience, and constant limitations were considered normal. Within the Comfort Zone series, the painting focuses on emotional states that are rarely spoken about openly but deeply experienced internally — fear of mistakes, silence, restraint, and the habit of living according to expectations created by others.

The central figure becomes a symbolic image of internal control. Hands cover the senses — sight, hearing, and voice — creating a feeling of silence, restriction, and emotional isolation. Only one eye remains open, turning into a point of tension and awareness, as if capturing the moment when a person begins to recognize the line between care and suppression.

The artwork gains additional conceptual depth through the use of authentic vintage materials from 1935–1945, including antique sheet music, geographical maps, old book pages, and a handwritten letter. These fragments of history function not only as texture but also as emotional memory, connecting personal experience with the collective atmosphere of a past generation shaped by rigid social norms and emotional restraint.

The palette is built on deep sepia, tobacco brown, burnt umber, warm bronze, and muted gold tones. Aged paper textures merge with dramatic shadows and soft highlights, creating an intimate and psychologically charged atmosphere. The contrast between darkness and light emphasizes the inner conflict between obedience and individuality.

Combining contemporary figurative painting with conceptual collage techniques, “Upbringing” exists between personal memory and social commentary. It speaks about inherited emotional patterns, invisible boundaries, and the quiet psychological pressure carried long after childhood ends.
