Original artwork description
Under this mask, another mask
I am fascinated by early 20th-century surrealist photography and the photographic avant-gardes of the 1920s, particularly how artists like Claude Cahun used the self-portrait to explore the fluidity of identity and the concept of the mask.
Today, Claude is considered a pioneer of identity photography and an icon of queer culture. One of her most famous quotes is: 'Neuter is the only gender that always suits me.' She didn't just cross-dress; she sought to dissolve the boundaries between masculine and feminine.
The work aims to destabilize the viewer and raise questions about the nature of the self. She holds a mask that appears to be the 'natural' or 'real' version of her own face, while her actual face is heavily made up. This subverts the common concept of a mask, suggesting that identity is a continuous performance
