I wanted to capture a quiet moment between a cowboy and his horse at the close of a long day. The warm glow of sunset bathes the plains in amber tones, while the sky seems to paint itself in sympathy. By tilting the cowboy’s head downward as he tends the reins, I conceal his face in shadow to emphasize the intimacy between man and nature. I used a combination of impasto and palette knife techniques to heighten the texture and depth—especially in the sky and on the horse’s reflective coat—to evoke both realism and emotion.
