Tserovani Fields was painted during a spontaneous moment on a Sunday picnic near the village of Tserovani. My wife, our friends, and I had come to enjoy the quiet valley when we discovered the surrounding fields covered in blooming poppies. The landscape lies between high mountains, where the weather can shift suddenly and dramatically.

As we sat among the flowers, heavy storm clouds began rolling across the sky. Our friends quickly packed up and left, but the spectacle of the changing light and gathering storm was impossible to ignore. I pulled the easel that always travels in the trunk of my car and began to paint.

The sky grew darker and more dramatic with every minute, yet the storm seemed to hold back just long enough. I finished the painting at the exact moment the first drops of rain touched the ground — as if the storm had decided to wait.

The work captures that fleeting tension between calm beauty and the approaching storm: bright poppies blazing across the valley under a powerful, shifting sky.
