Toy's Voice (2020) Original Acrylic Painting by Natalia Okoń-Rudnicka

140 x 100 x 3cm (unframed)

£1,562.99

At first glance, this painting appears to be a portrait of toys familiar to children of the mid-20th century – objects now considered collectible. A more attentive observer, however, will notice something unsettling. The toys are marching toward us in tight formation, slowly but relentlessly. One of them is carrying a weapon. Mickey Mouse, painted in the colors of the American flag, raises his hand in a gesture of greeting – but the presence of an armed figure makes us feel anything but safe. The calming text hovering above the toys does not help either. The tin creatures advance, seize our attention, yet instinctively we feel that what we should really be doing is running away. Is this not a metaphor for dictatorship?
And more specifically, for the contemporary United States under Trump’s leadership?
It is time to be afraid.
