A barge comes under tow on the Grand Union canal. I worked this picture up from a photograph c.1950. That particular canal was quite familiar to me as a boy. Even back then Grand Union traffic had become a desultory business and the days of pleasure craft had hardly begun. It occurred to me that everyone needs a tow at some point in life. And it is surprising what weight may be moved for some small effort.
This print is a combination of two print techniques. The dark green is pulled from a relief matrix cut from rubber and the other colours are printed by stencil. I think the two methods work well together and I hope to pursue the idea further.
