There is a reason Gabo Mendoza paints this way.

Working from Oaxaca, Gabo Mendoza has developed a visual language that feels almost childlike at first glance. Simple lines. Direct forms. Nothing hidden behind technique.

But this is not about simplicity.

Earlier in his life, Mendoza spent time in Mexico City working closely with children in vulnerable situations, including those growing up in street environments. That experience stayed with him.

His work began to shift.

Instead of painting with distance, he chose to paint from a place of fragility. The figures became more instinctive, more immediate, almost as if drawn by a child. Not to imitate innocence, but to give space to voices that are rarely seen or heard.

There is, at times, a raw immediacy in his line that may recall artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat. But Mendoza’s work remains deeply rooted in his own context. It does not reference. It emerges.

In this piece, three toritos appear with that same quiet intensity. Their forms are reduced, almost disarmed, yet deeply present. They feel less like animals and more like something remembered. Something protected. Something that could disappear if you look away too quickly.

The dark surface holds them in place, while the golden lines give them just enough weight to remain.

Nothing here is over explained.

And that is precisely what makes the work stay with you.

Collectors who connect with Mendoza’s work tend to recognize that it is not about decoration. It is about presence.

Pieces like this are not always immediate.

But they are rarely forgotten.
