Original artwork description
I painted To Sail Is to Live as a visual call to embrace the inherent risks of a life fully lived. The portrait features a young man in a vibrant yellow jersey, clutching a red soccer ball, set against a dynamic, windswept cerulean sky that represents the "trade winds" of opportunity. To me, playing it safe is the fastest route to destruction; I wanted to capture the moment an individual decides to throw off the bowlines and sail away from the safe harbor of the known. This work is an exploration of that pivotal choice to explore, dream, and discover despite the uncertainties of the open sea.
The composition utilizes a high-contrast palette of primary colors to mirror the electric energy of a life in motion. The subject’s steady, upward gaze signifies a readiness to face whatever challenges the horizon holds, embodying the philosophy that you haven't truly lived until you've "sailed." Through this portrait, I aim to celebrate the courage required to take risks, honoring the resilient spirit that understands that our greatest disappointments often come from the things we left undone rather than the mistakes we made while daring to try.
