Ember Field is a richly layered abstract painting inspired by my fascination with ancient manuscripts and archaeological scrolls—objects that carry the weight of time, mystery, and forgotten stories.
At its centre, a large red form—textured and irregular—floats like a weathered fragment against a dark, muted ground. The layers of crimson, ochre, burnt umber, and shadowy purples suggest faded ink, scorched edges, and the slow erosion of surface over time. The textures are built up using palette knife and washes, creating depth and a sense of history embedded in the paint itself.
There are echoes here of mid-century abstract expressionism, but also the silent beauty of aged vellum and worn parchment. It’s a piece that invites close viewing—full of subtle shifts, buried marks, and traces of something once written or held.
Perfect for collectors who are drawn to modern abstraction with a story rooted in time, memory, and material.
The canvas is sold unstretched, with generous painted borders to allow for flexible presentation. It can be either stretched on wooden bars (with plenty of painted canvas to go around the sides - overall canvas material size is 144cm x 105cm and actual artwork size is 136cm x 98 cm. It can be stretched on 120cm x 80cm bars) or mounted in a frame. The painting will be rolled up and safely packaged for postage.
This is a one of a kind artwork, created and painted by me. Signed on the front of the artwork.
Please note: the picture frames are not included in the sale of the painting and is used only as a visual guide. World Wide shipping takes around 10 days to arrive, depending on it's destination.
