Theseus and Ariadne in Naxos, 2020
Acrylic on canvas
This painting draws inspiration from the ancient Greek myth of Theseus and Ariadne. According to the story, Ariadne helps Theseus defeat the Minotaur in the labyrinth of Crete by giving him a thread that allows him to find his way out after killing the monster. After the Minotaur’s death, the two flee together by sea and arrive on the island of Naxos. Yet the myth takes a tragic turn: while Ariadne sleeps, Theseus abandons her on the island and sails away.
In this painting I reinterpret that myth through a surreal transposition of time and space. The scene unfolds along a dark road lined with tall cypresses, a landscape that could belong equally to antiquity or to the present. In the distance, the lights of an approaching car cut through the night and illuminate the figures, as if a modern machine had suddenly invaded an ancient myth. This beam of light becomes a bridge between eras, revealing a moment where past and present coexist.
Only the landscape, the cypresses, the darkness, the silent horizon, remains intact across time. Everything else shifts. The myth migrates into the present and the present slips back into myth.
Theseus appears not as a classical hero but as an ambiguous humanoid figure, almost faceless, suggesting a force rather than a person. In the image he seems to possess a strange power of control and seduction over Ariadne. From his hands descend thin threads that manipulate her body, and Ariadne levitates beneath him, suspended and subjected to the dominant force of Theseus.
I wanted this painting to capture the emotional tension of the myth, a moment suspended between seduction, power, betrayal, and destiny.
