The ‘These Days’ paintings are Richard’s latest series of work which he’s been working on for the past eighteen months. The paintings were made by applying and abrading paint then reapplying layers of opaque colour to create jewel-like pockets within each piece. This is a signature of Richard's work - the seen, unseen and the faintly seen - and this way of working allows one to always see new things in the work. For Richard, painting is a magical act to push back against all the terrible and, at times, overwhelming events we are living through. For him the studio is a place where hope is born.
