A portrait of a schoolteacher who refused to choose between marriage and her profession.
Until the Disqualification Removal Act of 1919, married women in the UK were barred from teaching. Women faced an impossible choice: keep their teaching position or marry.
This photograph reimagines a Victorian schoolteacher at this crossroads, a woman who asserted her right to both work and a personal life in a system designed to prevent it.
This image is part of my Women in Quiet Rebellion series, which explores the constrained ways in which women throughout history have resisted societal limitations
