Built by the Brunels using their revolutionary tunnelling shield, the Thames Tunnel was the first in the world to connect two sides of a navigable river. Connecting the London districts of Rotherhithe and Wapping, the golden age of the tunnel was as a pedestrian crossing and tourist attraction. In 1869 the Thames Tunnel carried its first train service, and it now forms part of the London Overground network.
This painting brings together into a single scene key events in the Thames Tunnel's more than 190 years of history.
