‘The sanity of nature’ describes an idyllic scene. It depicts no specific place in particular and is instead a scene that could belong to many a land. It is a figment of the imagination: a place where the mind can retreat, away from troubled thoughts and the persistent waves of information that threaten to drown us.
The painting invites the viewer further down a path. The shadow cast in the foreground could well be of an unknown character or alternatively, and perhaps preferably, a depiction of the viewer themself.
