This painting began as a representational Portrait of my eldest Daughter, but somewhere along the line became merged with a representational portrait of my Granddaughter. In the end, the two of them look very similar, so… The only thing I knew about this painting before I began, was that it would include a Red Chair. I don’t normally use much red ( small details in red if I do) so I’ve no idea why I was sure the chair- quite a predominate part of the piece- should be red?
My favorite color combo is Blue and White; particularly in a Floral pattern. So the back “wallpaper” pictured, is part torn pieces of floral decorative paper, with ink and paint loosely mimicking the pattern, used in between… I haven’t included a Birdcage in a painting for quite a long time, and it came as a total surprise! Cut from heavy drawing paper, as were both birds, these collaged bit brought texture to the overall piece. Some real leaves- plucked during a walk one day- have been incorporated into the bunch of flowers flowing out if the basket this girl
holds in her lap. The western styled boots on the subject’s feet probably denote something to do with the days of the “Wild West”; the taming of a land brought about by tough, willful people many generations ago, who envisioned creating a new life, in a new place. The image wraps around the edges of the canvas, so that it can be hung, unframed if preferred.
