The Quiet Fold

The mist comes down into the Tunbridge valley before the sun has cleared the ridge, pooling in the hollows, low and slow. Two sheep stand in the foreground, untroubled by the cold, their fleeces beaded with moisture and lit to a pale silver-gray. The grass beneath their hooves is pressed flat and dark with dew. They are not moving. The line between field and hill has dissolved into the fog, and the valley holds everything loosely, without edge or boundary.
Behind them, the red barn surfaces in degrees: first a smear of color, then a shape, then boards darkened by decades of weather under a rusted tin roof. The hills carry the last of the autumn color, amber and ochre gone soft and distant in the flat diffuse light. There is no wind. The valley is not silent so much as full of the small, steady sounds of a farm morning coming on: the soft press of hooves in wet grass, the weight of cold air on old timber.

About the print
Each piece is made on location and printed by hand in my Vermont studio with archival pigment inks rated for over a hundred years of color stability. The 25 x 17 is printed on Premium Satin paper. The 43 x 29 and 61 x 41 are printed on Luster Photo Paper, 260gsm. Each print carries a 0.5 inch archival white border, ships rolled in a heavy tube, and arrives with a signed certificate.
About my work
I spent thirty years cooking in farm-to-table kitchens before returning to the camera. My work is held in private collections across the United States and Europe. A traveling exhibition is currently on view at The University of Vermont Medical Center and Burlington City Hall in Vermont, and my photographs were recently included in the 35th Annual Green Mountain Photography Show. I am represented in Vermont by Artisan's Gallery in Waitsfield, ArtHound in Essex, Artists in Residence in Saint Albans, The Emile Gruppe Gallery, and Remarkable Things in Stowe.
