The Portal (2026) Photograph by Ronald Anthony

81 x 121 x 1cm (framed) / 80 x 120cm (actual image size)

£7,750

The Portal is a black‑and‑white abstract study of a helical staircase, viewed from its centre and rising toward a circular walk‑on glass rooflight. The upward perspective transforms the structure into a sculptural form, drawing the viewer toward the luminous opening above — "The Portal".

I explored several compositions, but the central, head‑on perspective offered the strongest sense of symmetry. In this orientation, the structure begins to slip toward abstraction, with the shadows creating a natural separation between elements. Any shift off‑centre caused those forms to intersect and lose clarity.

Ultimately, positioning the stair to rise from the bottom of the frame created a subtle directional pull, guiding the viewer toward the subject.

The geometry, composition, and cleanliness of the image generated an almost sci-fi feel about it, thus inspiring the title.

This piece is printed directly onto premium Aluminium Dibond, selected for its rigidity, longevity, and immaculate surface, which is perfect for deep tone black and white images. It is finished in an elegant 10mm aluminium Artbox frame to give the piece a modern, clean, sculptural presence.
