The Pale Interval (2024) Original Mixed-media Painting by Gela MIKAVA

In The Pale Interval, Gela Mikava builds a frontal portrait around an irregular passage of cream that extends across the forehead and descends between the eyes. This light area separates the darker features while holding the face together.

Muted red centres sit within violet and grey eye sockets. Their uneven shapes give the gaze a watchful, unsettled quality. Below, translucent grey-green passages suggest the nose and cheeks, while a concentrated pink-red mouth interrupts the subdued palette.

The face appears simultaneously exposed and masked. Its features remain recognisable, yet colour refuses to settle into a conventional likeness: the pale ground becomes as important as the marks that describe the person.

The visible canvas weave lends the miniature a tactile immediacy. Viewed closely, its restrained arrangement of light, shadow and colour creates a presence that exceeds its small scale.

Painted in acrylic on canvas and presented in a black frame with a cream mount. Overall framed dimensions: 14 × 14 cm.
