L'ORTICHIEN is a horizontal rectangular painting created using acrylic on cotton canvas stretched over wood.
This painting is part of the Medieval Bestiary series, inspired by late medieval art, which saw the flourishing of illuminated manuscripts dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, sometimes illustrated with incredible chimeras with rather crude but highly expressive features, such as the British Luttrell Psalter (1320-1340).
These particularly zany cartoons gave rise to this series, which recreates, in the style and colours of the period, invented or reworked cartoons on old pink, gold or copper backgrounds decorated with friezes and designed on the principle of the cartoons used by tapestry makers of yesteryear, with floral motifs or styles repeated here and there to fill the painting.
