ChimeraTriptych is a set of three small 20 x 20 cm square acrylic paintings on cotton canvas stretched over wood.
It includes : The Nautilus Bird, The Oryncus Duck and The Chimera with Pumpkin.
These paintings are part of the Medieval Bestiary series, inspired by the art of the late Middle Ages, which saw the flourishing of illuminated manuscripts dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, sometimes illustrated with incredible chimeras with rather crude but expressive features, such as the British Luttrell Psalter (1320-1340).
These particularly zany jokes have given rise to this series, which recreates invented or reworked chimeras in the style and colours of the period, on gilded or coppered backgrounds adorned with friezes and imagined on the principle of the cartoons of the upholsterers of yesteryear, with motifs of flowers or styles repeated here and there to furnish the picture.
The square format of the works reinforces the idea of the durability of this medieval art past, with its phantasmagorical traditions firmly rooted in the eternal imagination.
