The Missing Ice Cream Salesman (2024)Watercolour by Noel Sawyer

In 2024 we visited Magaggio, a small town on Lake Como in Northern Italy and I sat and I began to sketch this interesting spot in the town centre. As lunchtime arrived the temperature increased and crowds reduced and the ice cream salesman's trade dropped off a little so he took the opportunity to renew his interest in a local girl who may have worked in one of the shops. People's reactions were interesting: One man seemed a little disgruntled that he couldn't get his ice cream, one chose to ignore it, an older woman was possibly outraged and another thought the whole thing was marvellous. I managed to capture some of it with my pen with very loose detail and added a couple of washes. A happy day. Note, the actual width is 28 not 26cm.

Windsor & Newton artist quality watercolours; Cobolt Blue, Light Red, Raw Sienna with black fine line pen on Saunders Waterford 200lb Not HP watercolour paper.
