I've become mesmerised by light effects, candle light in particular, and how lighting can transform atmosphere.

My previous painting, 'Carol Singer', described the softness of candlelight, its gentle aura, but when I came to paint this work I wanted to use the lighting more dramatically and the result is striking and even a little unsettling.

My sitter was very patient as I arranged the lighting, the candle glow striking him directly on the chin before softening as it spread out. His hands in particular fascinated me, one barely visible holding the candle, the other protecting the flame.

A painting to muse over.
