Original artwork description:

I remember when I first saw Abdul, I could never forget. I was with a delegation visiting a village called Ramia on the southern coast of Bangladesh. I had been asked to produce some portraits to show the strength and resilience of the people.
The village was in shock, touched by panic and fear as yet another cyclone was forecast. More floods were coming and evacuation would begin again.
I saw fear in the eyes of the community, the people were exhausted, yet there was no escape, they had no where else to go. This was their home.
When I saw Abdul I saw a man with incredible courage and strength. Resilience flowed through his body, joy and hope surrounded him. This was a guy who would never give up. This was the light that would never go out.
I wanted to create a hyperrealism portrait of Abdul showing every skin pore, every hair, every story that had marked his body and soul. I decided to paint a light bulb hung around his neck, a light that was powered by Abdul’s love. I wanted to show the beauty of nature as butterflies flew in harmony with the pure joy and radiance of Abdul.
I wanted to create a painting of a man who had mastered life.
