THE GULF IN SHADES (STUDIO 20) is part of my ongoing exploration of coastal abstraction along the Gulf of Follonica.
In this image, I sought to balance motion and stillness through a minimalist composition that places the horizon almost imperceptibly between two shifting fields of color — sea and sky.
The photograph was captured in soft, diffused afternoon light, where the blues and greys of the water dissolve into muted ivory and pale sand tones near the shore.
A gentle blur of motion turns the waves into a fluid texture, while distant hills emerge as subtle tonal gradients. The result is a visual rhythm that feels both calm and expansive, inviting the viewer to drift into the horizon.
I was drawn to the restrained palette and the quiet geometry of the scene — the near-horizontal layers that evoke both painting and memory. Through long exposure and careful framing, I wanted to distill the experience of looking out over the gulf into a study of tone, atmosphere, and balance.
This piece brings a sense of openness and visual harmony, ideal for interiors that celebrate natural light, calm, and contemporary minimalism.
