Tucked away in a green suburb of a German city I found this house, this perfect fairy tale house of mystery. Its walls are yellow, with columns and busts, dark windows with purple woodwork, and a red and pink roof that appears, to my eyes at least, as sugary gingerbread. The house appears to date back to the end of the 19th century perhaps, a glorious romp of fin de siècle architecture, a swirl of waltzes, a splash of the Bohemian. It is the overgrown outpost of Ruritania, the place where spells are cast. I imagine I can hear ghostly piano cords, the smell of pastries and freshly roasted coffee, the hint of peach blossom. This work is unique and full of colour. It is painted on a canvas board, making it ideal for framing.
