I painted this scene to capture the quiet warmth of a lamplit street on a damp evening, where everyday life carries on beneath a brooding sky. The glow from the windows of The Gaslamp Cavern spills out onto the wet cobbles, reflecting light and movement and drawing people together against the cold.
I was interested in the contrast between the warmth inside and the cool, smoky air outside — the children playing in the street, figures passing by, and the suggestion of the harbour beyond, half-lost in mist. Using oil paint, I focused on atmosphere, reflection, and storytelling rather than fine detail, allowing the scene to feel lived-in and slightly timeless.
This painting is an original oil on canvas, measuring approximately 20 x 20 inches, and is inspired by historic waterfront streets, memory, and imagination rather than a specific place.
