The Forest at 4am, 2014
Acrylic and oil pastel on canvas, large format
In creating The Forest at 4am, I sought to blur the boundary between reality and the surreal. This large-scale painting is a self-portrait inspired by a dream in which I find myself transformed into a zebra, standing in the depths of a dense and mysterious jungle. The human face is my own, emerging from the striped body of the animal, suggesting the fragile connection between human consciousness and the instinctive forces of nature.
In the dream I experience the forest as the very first scene of Dante’s Divine Comedy, the moment when the poet awakens lost in the dark wood before encountering Virgil and the beasts that block his path. The jungle in the painting echoes that symbolic space of confusion, fear, and revelation.
The surrounding vegetation is lush and untamed. Tangled vines and towering palms stretch toward a fiery orange sky, while deep greens cover the forest floor. In the distance, the palms appear to sway violently, as if stirred by a tropical storm or an approaching hurricane, creating a sense of tension and impending transformation.
A small serpent quietly approaches, poised as if about to strike. Its presence introduces a moment of suspense, perhaps the instant that will force the dream to break, the threshold between the dream world and awakening.
The Forest at 4am becomes a meditation on identity and the subconscious. In the fragile hour before dawn, when dreams still cling to the mind, the painting suggests that the human self may wander through landscapes that are at once personal, mythical, and deeply rooted in collective imagination.
