The first automobile in Prague, 1898 (2020) Original Oil Painting by Jan Machac

85 x 75 x 2cm (framed) / 70 x 60cm (actual image size)

£2,600.13

That day, time stood still in front of Josef Mráček's shop at No. 232. A horseless machine stood on the Prague pavement — and the whole street didn't know how to behave towards it. Men in hats look on with hesitant respect. Children push forward. A woman on the balcony leans over the railing. The boy below raises his head and doesn't yet know that he is experiencing the end of one world and the beginning of another.

The painting was created based on an authentic period photograph capturing the arrival of one of the first cars in Prague. Every figure, every detail of the facade, the inscription above the arch, the canal grate in the pavement — everything has its origin in reality. The Josef Mráček sign really hung at this address. The figure in the blue coat really stood in the crowd. The moment is real.

Oil painting gives back what the photograph took away — colors, light, texture, and a sense of presence.
