The Backyard plays on the balance between intimacy and tension. It portrays a couple in an ambiguous outdoors setting, one that could be both domestic and alienating. The intriguing relationship created by the poses and size difference between the man and the woman is further enhanced by the compositional framing and the high contrast. The contrast between the expressive and saturated painting of the flash and the cold and flat handling of the environment adds to the tension and complexity of the painting.
