This painting captures a detail from the Cathedral door in Salamanca, Spain, focusing on the unexpected figure of a small astronaut embedded in the stonework. The astronaut is a modern addition, sculpted by Miguel Romero during restoration work in 1992, and was intentionally placed on the façade of the New Cathedral as a symbol of the 20th century.
The work is inspired by a visit to Salamanca shortly before Christmas, when a "Son et Lumière" projection in the Plaza Mayor prominently featured the astronaut. Curious about this cute little figure the artist sought it out the following day. Hidden in plain sight and almost imperceptible at first glance, the astronaut’s scale and placement reward careful observation—an encounter echoed in the painting itself.
