Original artwork description
At the first viewings, people asked: Where is this? I know this place. Yet it does not truly exist. What they recognized was not a location, but a feeling — the melancholy atmosphere of summer fading away.
The tree in the low autumn light, with its changing leaves, I encountered on one of my daily walks. But there was no gate, no fence. Through light, nature, and landscape, I try to translate a feeling or a memory rather than depict a precise reality.
With a nod to David Hockney, who during lockdown in Normandy created 'The Arrival of Spring' and reminded us: “Do remember they can’t cancel the spring.” In his work, he captured the quiet, miraculous unfolding of the season as a counterbalance to despair — hopeful, tender, and alive.
Like him, I seek to show how nature can hold both hope and reflection.
The idea came to me in my studio when the sun shone brightly on the orange-prepared canvas.
