Original artwork description
In the south of Tel Aviv, I spotted this yellow building. The south of the city drew me in, a contrast to where I used to live. It was harsher here, tattier and yet I could strip away the layers of clutter to see how it once was, when the buildings were new and white. A time of new beginnings, of hope and dread and youth. Feral cats stare at me, their eyes malevolent and suspicious. It is cool, a welcome freshness, a breeze from the Mediterranean. I wander into the open stairwells, places of dark shadow and stone, places of clutter, where dozens of letter boxes are bent out of shape, stickers faded and layered like papier maché. I smell fried food, muffled voices, an aroma of baking. On the hour, four long beeps signal the start of a news bulletin, then a measured female voice, in Hebrew as clear as crystal. So I decided to paint the building, to capture its yellow walls and its shadows. I used some collage, to add atmosphere, Hebrew letters, snippets of life.
This work is a perfect souvenir of Tel Aviv, a lovely gift for a home.
