Tacoma Supply Ships (2024) Original Acrylic Painting by Dean Anthony Brink

This breakthrough work for me congeals what compels me to paint in Taiwan. The Tacoma Supply Ships are inspired by the Navy ships in Commencement Bay as seen from the docks just down the street from where I lived and visit when I can in Tacoma. Ironically, the ships in Tacoma face the Chinese Reconciliation Park, which commemorates the 1885 mob expulsion of Chinese residents in Tacoma, leaving a black mark on Tacoma history. For us in Taiwan, where I am also a citizen, we face a situation in which these very ships may be called to help us. As a peace advocate in the US, now as a (dual) citizen of a smaller country, I feel the terrible contradictions that make geopolitics so complicated, no longer having the luxury of a powerful nation ensconced between two oceans. In Taiwan, we are an island subject to alliances and playing all sides tactfully. The ships are a potential lifeline if attacked by hostile forces.
