I painted this picture on-site at the MN Landscape Arboretum. It is a portrait of a tall bearded iris. This variety of iris flower is called "Swazi Princess". It is a gem of a specimen in a gem of a collection! This detailed painting contains all the subtle nuances of color and shading in this splendid flower, including deep purple to black with lavender, fuchsia, and lavender-blue highlights. There is some iridescent oil paint mixed into the painting, lending a subtle shimmer. Touches of light green, blue-green, and yellow paint indicate the garden in the background where this iris lives.

The painting is made with oil paint on canvas. It is framed in a black wood frame with antique bronze details.
