- Rebecca Coleman
- All Artworks
- Swallowtail Butterfly
Artwork description
FRAMED VERSION: In this original wood engraving, the artist takes something known and recognised mainly for its colour, and uses an intricate, monochrome medium to offer a fresh and unusual perspective. The creature's dynamic position - with wings aloft - is in marked contrast to the traditional, flattened pose of the collected butterfly. By subverting these conventions, the artist is able to highlight delicate, beautiful details of the insect that may often be overlooked.
Image size 15x10cm; hand-printed, mounted, framed and glazed. Unframed prints from this edition are also available.
Wood engraving is a form of fine art printmaking. The artist uses specialised tools to create the image in relief (and reverse) on the end grain of a block of hardwood - usually boxwood - by removing the 'white' parts of the image. This technique is painstaking and highly technical, and allows for the creation of exquisitely detailed works. Rebecca's wood engravings have been exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, with the Society of Wood Engravers, and in galleries across the world from Japan to the USA.
