This is the last print in the entire series. For eighteen years I have made linocuts of woodlands, messy underbrush and dense canopies in which black ink creates the tangle of trees enveloping the viewer with their velvety shadows and dappled light.

Linocuts are the most physical form of printmaking, an ancient act of carving light out of darkness. I chose linoleum over wood because unlike wood the flat, even surface allows me more control and detail. I carve using one tool, one ink and one tone of paper. One viewpoint puts the viewer in and of the forest.

I believe there is a deep unconscious desire to walk on wooded paths, stroll through city parks, and camp under the stars. This desire to reunite, a yearning to feel our evolutionary human history linked to the cool open air and moist pine-laden floor of the forest. This is a strong primal memory of our connection with the earth. It’s as if we’re on a refreshing pilgrimage to a sacred place we once encountered.
